DCC Athletics at a Glance

The Buccaneer basketball teams compete in both the Mon-Dak Conference (Mon-Dak) and Region IX of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). During the past year teams have advanced to the postseason, and individuals have set region records. The 2004 Men's Basketball team was one win away from going to the National NJCAA tournament. The teams play an upbeat, aggressive, physical style of ball that is very exciting to watch.

Rodeo competition is in full action during fall and spring semesters putting Dawson's team against competitors from the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Associations (NIRA) Big Sky Region. The team is traditionally strong, and competes against four-year colleges and universities as well as two-year schools in the powerhouse Big Sky Region of the NIRA. Five athletes qualified for the CNFR in the 2006 season. DCC sponsors a home rodeo where the team and many of their friends get involved in putting on an exciting four day event. The DCC cowboys and cowgirls have successfully competed in regional and national competition, winning the National Championship in 1981. Practice is held in an indoor arena or outside in the great Montana sunshine.

Men’s baseball and women’s fast pitch softball have been intercollegiate sports for DCC since 1997. The baseball team won the conference in 1998, 1999, 2000, tied in 2002 and won their Regional tournament in 2001. In 2001 they advanced to the Region IX World Series where they placed seventh. The 2004 team won 28 games in a row in one stretch. The team began competing in Division II in Region XIII for the 2007 season, and they will continue their competition within the Mon-Dak Baseball Conference.

Women’s fast pitch softball competes in Division I of the NJCAA. Their travels take them to Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota. The past five seasons they have won their Regional Tournament and advanced to the NJCAA Division III World Series, where they placed 3rd, 4th, 5th, 5th and 4th respectively. The NJCAA Division III World Series was held in Horseheads NY.(NJCAA: National Junior College Athletic Association)
