Kolberg Field - Home of Buccaneer Baseball

RECREATIONAL COMPLEX DEDICATED

Over a year of planning and hard work went into designing and building the new DCC recreational complex, in October the results of that hard work became apparent. The dedication of the B.L. Baker Memorial softball field and the Kolberg baseball field took place on October 4th.

Throughout the planning phase building site options were looked at. The site chosen lies just below Dawson Community College where Taylor Avenue turns into College Drive. Construction of the complex began in the fall of 2002 beginning with leveling the landscape and preparing the site for building. The majority of the construction was finished by fall of 2003. Some of the finishing touches included planting trees and volunteers spent hours helping roll out and placing sod on the field.

A generous donation of $50,000 made by Foundation member, Hilde Baker was earmarked for a women’s softball field got the ball rolling. An equally generous donation of $50,000 by the Kolberg Family to the College provided for the baseball field. In addition to the donations made by Ms. Baker and the Kolbergs, a $75,000 grant was secured with Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks to complete the project.

On October 4th an official dedication of the complex took place. Representatives from Hilde Baker’s family and the Kolberg family were present for the dedication. DCC President Terry Hetrick made the official dedication which was covered by local television and radio media. After the dedication the baseball and softball teams took to the fields for their first games on their new fields.

Even with the completion of the fields, there are still a few small projects left to complete the complex. Those projects include a paved walkway from the student dorms, the seating around the fields, a concession stand, public restrooms, and locker rooms for the players. A sledding hill and ice skating rink are planned to offer public winter time activities to the complex. Currently there has been no timeline set for finishing these projects.
