Volleyball Freshman shines

Frenchie can hit. When Myriam Lebied-Julien signed on with the Buccaneer volleyball team, the freshman from Riom, France, nicknamed "Frenchie" by her teammates, expected to play as a setter. After all, that was her specialty. Or so she had been told. But it wasn't long after fall training camp began for the Dawson Community College women that Coach John Marble said Julien's talent as a hitter began to show. "We realized that she could contribute as an outside hitter," Marble said. "She reads the court very well and can find the open spot on the floor.

Three Buccaneer volleyball players will participate in their last matches at the Toepke Center this weekend.

They are the last of the first – the only players from the 2008 inaugural team at Dawson Community College to return for a second season – the majority of the team graduated last spring.

Buccaneers play for pink; lose close match to Bismarck

When Lady Buccaneer Kirby Sabec went up for an attack during Monday night's Dig Pink match, she wasn't just looking for a kill. She was swinging for money.

Dawson Community College took on Bismarck State College in Mon-Dak Conference play at the Toepke Center, dedicating the night to Dig Pink, a national breast cancer awareness rally promoted by the Side-Out Foundation.

Dawson Community College sophomore Amanda Shadbolt is the Mon-Dak conference volleyball player of the week. The 5-11 Canadian hitter is in her second year with the Buccaneer program and was recognized after a stand-out week of play for the Bucs.

She racked up 33 kills, six blocks, 22 digs, five aces and four assists over five matches for the team last week. Shadbolt, speaking from the Wyo-Braska Shootout in Scottsbluff, Neb., on Thursday said she was honored by the news of the conference pick.

Inaugural One-Pitch Tournament Scheduled for Early October

Dawson Community College’s Kolberg Field will host the first annual One-Pitch Slugfest. DCC’s women’s basketball and softball players are joining forces to organize a one-pitch co-ed softball tournament October 10-11, 2009. The tournament registration fee is $200 and rosters and fees are due Wednesday, October 7, 2009.

Teams will be guaranteed four games and games will be limited to 45 minutes. In a one pitch tournament each batter will come to the plate with a full count. There will be prizes for top teams and all proceeds benefit DCC athletics.

Buccaneers win first home match ever

The Buccaneer volleyball team made program history Tuesday night at the Toepke Center, winning its first home match ever in a five-set thriller against Dakota College at Bottineau.

"It is fabulous to win our first ever home match and our fourth match on the season," said Coach John Marble. "This is a match that we expected ourselves to win."

DCC volleyball team taking Little Bucs registrations, mini-camp planned

The Dawson Community College volleyball team is taking registrations for its Little Bucs fan club for kids in grades K-5. A mini-camp has been scheduled to kick off the season for the club following the home game beginning Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 5 p.m.

DCC Volleyball headed to North Dakota

The Dawson Community College volleyball team is headed to North Dakota this weekend for a triangular tournament at Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, and Coach John Marble said his team is ready to snap a string of losses.

"We are excited to be playing at Trinity this weekend," he said. "This weekend provides us with a great opportunity to pick up some wins."

The Lady Bucs will be competing against Trinity and the Jamestown College JV team.

The last two weeks have been full of surprises for the Lady Buccaneers; between the return of a member of last year's inaugural team, introduction of an unexpected new player and emergence of a freshman as a leader at the net, the Dawson Community College squad hasn't had a dull moment.

Bucs threaten upset against Wahpeton; lose thriller

The Lady Buccaneer volleyball team was within two points of upsetting last year's Mon-Dak conference champions Monday night, barely conceding the thriller against the North Dakota State College of Science after five hard-fought sets of play.

"It was a battle right down to the end," said John Marble, head volleyball coach at Dawson Community College. "It was a good way to open the conference."
