Bucs threaten upset against Wahpeton; lose thriller

The Lady Buccaneer volleyball team was within two points of upsetting last year's Mon-Dak conference champions Monday night, barely conceding the thriller against the North Dakota State College of Science after five hard-fought sets of play.

"It was a battle right down to the end," said John Marble, head volleyball coach at Dawson Community College. "It was a good way to open the conference."

New Women’s Softball Coach at DCC

Janelle Higgins isn’t warming the bench, she’s ready to go as the new women’s softball coach at DCC.

 Janelle Higgins has been hired by Dawson Community College as the new women’s softball coach. Coach Higgins comes from Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa where she was the assistant basketball coach for two years and helped with softball for one year. Her other coaching credits include head softball coach at Northeast Nodaway High School in Ravenwood, Missouri where the team set a school record for wins and advanced to the district final game for the first time in 10 years.

Lady Bucs go down in three at home

A losing streak continues to frustrate the Lady Bucs, who were swept at home Tuesday night during their first match at the Toepke Center this season.

The Williston State College Tetons, the National Junior College Athletic Association's #21 pre-season pick in division II play, defeated the Buccaneers with scores of 10-25, 19-25 and 16-25.

"I feel like we came overly excited and underprepared for our home crowd," said John Marble, DCC volleyball head coach. "We had a lot of nerves."

Lady Bucs kick off season this weekend

The Dawson Community College volleyball program kicks off its second season on the road this weekend, and Coach John Marble said his team is ready. "We're ready to go play," he said. "You can only do so much in practice." 

Oklahoma Player Joins DCC Volleyball Team

Megan Young, a 5-8, middle blocker from Catoosa, Oklahoma.

 A freshman from Oklahoma has joined the Buccaneer volleyball team. Megan Young, a 5-8, middle blocker from Catoosa, Okla., arrived at Dawson Community College last week for fall training. "We are excited to broaden our recruiting base with the addition of Megan to the team," said Coach John Marble. Young, who plans to study psychology, comes to DCC with an all-district, all-state volleyball background on her high school varsity team. "Megan has a great arm on her and is a superb athlete,” Marble said.

Glendive Cowboy takes first in Sidney

Cole Burman, DCC alumnus, of Glendive recently had a couple of nice paydays after competing in the bull riding at the Sidney fair and the Glasgow fair.

At the Richland County Fair and Rodeo in Sidney, Burman scored a 79 on Spin Doctor to take top honors in the bull riding. Burman followed that performance up with a 2nd place finish in the bull riding at the Northeast Montana Fair and Rodeo in Glasgow. Burman claimed $1485.99 and $866 in prize money respectively at these two events.

Local Cowboy rides at home, wins at Baker

Cody Buller, Dawson Community College alumnus, competed in his hometown rodeo in Glendive on Thursday then traveled to Baker to ride in the Fallon County Fair PRCA Rodeo. Buller finished third in the bull riding at the Dawson County Fair PRCA Rodeo with a score of 71 and followed that ride up with a score of 85 to win the bull riding in Baker.

Rayna Rice of Sidney again placed in the barrel racing. At the Dawson County rodeo, Rice had a time of 17.73, which was good enough to put her in fifth place.

Buccaneer Baseball Signs Five More Student Athletes

Dawson Community College baseball coach Brent Diegel is pleased to announce the recent signing of five more student athletes for the upcoming 2009-2010 Buccaneer Baseball season.

Bobby King, a pitcher and infielder from Brigham City, Utah, played his high school baseball with the Box Elder High School Bees. He will join his friend and current sophomore Danny Nevling on the Buccaneer roster. At 5 foot 11, and 165 pounds, King was a Class 4A All-State honorable mention player in 2008.

DCC to Host Women's Volleyball Event

Glendive's women's volleyball players have been invited to a special VIP volleyball sneak peek event.

Glendive's women's volleyball players have been invited to a special VIP volleyball sneak peek event at Dawson Community College. Members of the Community Recreation's Women's League, Leisure League and Co-ed league are invited to this exclusive women-only event, giving them an opportunity to be the first people to see the 2009 Buccaneer Volleyball team in action this season.

Training Camp Begins for DCC Volleyball

Volleyball players have reported for fall training camp at Dawson Community College, kicking off the second season for the program.

Eight players have started the two-a-day practices and weightlifting routine, and head coach John Marble said a ninth player was expected to arrive from Oklahoma on Friday. Paperwork for a tenth player also was expected by the end of the week. "It's great to be back in the gym," Marble said Wednesday.
