The first day of the Region IX Tournament showcased the talent of the region's teams with some exciting volleyball matches. Western Wyoming showed why they are ranked second in the nation, but winning the Region IX Tournament will be no easy task with Casper, LCCC, and Central Wyoming also looking very strong in their first matches. The results of the first day are:
WWCC defeats Dawson 25-7, 25-13, 25-19
Casper defeats EWC 25-23, 25-20, 25-19
Central WY defeats Sheridan 25-19, 25-17, 25-18
Dawson Community College will be hosting the 2010 Region IX volleyball tournament November 3rd through November 6th. There will be eight teams from Montana and Wyoming competing for the title of Region IX champion. Games start Wednesday at 2:00 PM at the DCC Toepke Center with Dawson Community College taking on Western Wyoming. It looks to be an exciting tournament with the winner going to the NJCAA National Tournament in West Plains, MO.
DCC will host the District 2C Volleyball Championships on October 28-30. Nine area teams will be vying for the right to participate in the Eastern C Divisional Tournament in Sidney on November 4-6. Four teams will advance from the District Championship to the Divisional Championship and a chance to earn a spot in the State Tournament.
The Dawson Community College Lady Buccaneers volleyball team fell to the Casper Thunderbirds in three games on Friday, 9-25, 14-25 and 17-25.
"We struggled to play with the intensity needed to keep up with Casper," DCC head coach John Marble said.
The Lady Bucs registered 20 kills and 20 assists in the match.
Key players for the Lady Bucs included Shelby Swant with 11 assists, Debbie Schendel with five kills, Desiree Schauman who registered 10 digs and Kirby Sabec honing four blocks. Schauman and Schendel each had one ace.
Dawson Community College freshman Debbie Schendel is the Mon-Dak conference volleyball player of the week. The 5' 7 outside hitter out of Great Falls, Montana is in her first year with the Buccaneer program and was recognized for the second time after another stand-out week of play for the Bucs.
Dawson Community College and Bismarck State College will meet on the volleyball court in Mon-Dak Conference play at Toepke Center, dedicating the night to Dig Pink October 5th at 7:00pm.
Dig Pink is the name of the breast cancer awareness rally that takes place in gyms all over the country during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is October.
The Mon-Dak volleyball player of the week is Mona Mijalkovic of Dawson Community College. In last weeks matches she had 60 kills, 18 blocks, 7 digs and 1 assist. She is a 6' Freshman right side hitter from Nis Serbia.
For the week of September 6-12, 2010 Debbie Schendel, a 5' 7" outside hitter, has been named player of the week. In four matches last week, Debbie had 24 kills, 48 digs, 6 blocks, 3 assists, and 18 aces. Debbie is a Freshman from Great Falls, Montana.
Registration is under way at Dawson Community College for Basketball Skills Camps and Volleyball Camps to be held on campus in Toepke Center.
The camps for boys and girls have an excellent staff and an affordable price. Coaches from the Dawson Community College Athletic programs as well as DCC players from the Buccaneer teams will instruct the participants.
Middle School Camp
Coach Marble and his staff will give hands-on training in all the basics of volleyball for middle school players. Middle school camp is set for July 26-27 at the DCC Toepke Center gym from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a one-hour break at noon. Cost is $65 and includes a t-shirt.
