DCC Early Childhood Program receives Grant

The Early Childhood Education Department at Dawson Community College has received a Best Beginnings Community Councils grant from the Early Childhood Services Bureau at the Department of Public Health and Human Services. The grant for $34,000 (renewable for a second year) was awarded to Brenda Stockert, Director of the DCC Early Childhood Education Department. It will be used to address services and needs related to school readiness issues and challenges in eastern Montana.  

Lady Bucs Drop Hard Fought Battle

Lady Bucs drop a hard fought battle to NDSCS in 4 sets with scores of 18-25, 25-22, 19-25, 16-25. Shelby Jessiman and Lindsey James led with 8 kills each. While NaTasha Mathis led with a .250 hitting efficiency and 5 blocks. Katie Lyons dished out 22 assists, 3 Service aces, three blocks, including 2 block solos, 11 digs, and 2 kills. Desiree Schauman led the team with 16 digs.

Volleyball players more than just athletes

It has been four years since Dawson Community College started a women’s volleyball program. And though the team’s current record of 4-15 fails to impress, it does not tell the whole story.

The team is now made up of mostly new players, as 10 of 14 women joined the team in the beginning of the season. Undersized and out-numbered, they now struggle to find the confidence needed to secure wins.

Still, these athletes consider themselves underdogs, fighting to establish a winning tradition for future Lady Buccaneers.

Tom Speechley Memorial Dodge Ball Tournament

The Dawson Community College Student Senate will commemorate the unique and passionate life of beloved history and humanities instructor Tom Speechley with a dodge ball tournament in his name Saturday, October 8 at 10am. Mr. Speechley passed away this past August in Cape Cod.

DCC volleyball finishes 1-3 in tournament

The Dawson Community College women’s volleyball team continued their road struggles this past weekend as they finished 1-3 in the Western Wyoming College Tournament.

With the losses, DCC fell to 4-15 on the season. They lost to Snow College on Friday in their first match, with scores of 7-25, 24-26 and 19-25, head coach John Marble said.

"[Snow College] was big, our pre-match cheer was David," Marble posted on the Lady Buccaneers’ Facebook page.

DCC has Lowest Tuition in Montana

Even with an increase in tuition, DCC is well under rates compared to other community colleges.

Finding an affordable college can be a challenge for students as tuitions rise during difficult economic times.

Even after a 5 percent increase in tuition, Dawson Community College remains the most affordable community college in the state.

For an in-district student, DCC charges $3,082 – nearly $600 less than Miles Community College and Flathead Valley Community College.

Campus Corps-Outside the Ordinary

Last Tuesday, students from Dawson Community College did something outside of the ordinary scope of service. Josh Cantrell, Tyler Sennett, and Kyle Davis—all general volunteers—spent the afternoon moving furniture from the basement of Dawson County Domestic Violence center to Zion Lutheran Church, to be obtained, free of charge, by those who need it most.

CNA-Certified Nurse Assistant Training

Classes start September 26th.
Students can learn the skills needed to become a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) in classes offered by Dawson Community College and Glendive Medical Center September 26 through October 18, 2011.

Classes will be held at GMC and the Extended Care Facility from 5-9pm Monday-Thursday and 1:45-10pm Friday. Registered Nurse Donna Knuths teaches the course. Cost of the 4-credit, 80-hour course is $70.00, and enrollment is limited. The book is additional. Contact the DCC book store at 377-9457.

Sophomore Desiree Schauman ranked #19 in the nation in Digs

Sophomore Desiree Schauman, 5'5", out of Helena, MT, is ranked #19 in the nation in Digs per set. "Pretty cool stuff" said Women's Volleyball Coach John Marble.

Schauman plays the DS position for the Buccaneers in the back row only. She is a Defensive Specialist, both quick and a good passer.
