POSITION: Director of Activity Buses

DEPARTMENT: Administrative Services  

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Dean of Administrative Services

SUMMARY OF WORK: The Director of Activity Buses promotes the mission of Dawson Community College and is responsible for scheduling drivers and routine maintenance of the activities buses. The position is a working supervisory position. The director reports to the Dean of Administrative Services.  This is a part-time 12 month position (5-10) per week.

JOB CHARACTERISTICS:

This position schedules buses and bus drivers for college activities. This position schedules routine inspections, maintenance and repairs for college buses. When necessary this position reviews driver’s time sheets and trip reports, and reports any accidents to the appropriate supervisor. This position must pay attention to details and timeliness of activities. Position may be required to work in various environments and is expected to be adequately prepared. Must be able to recognize problems and provide adequate descriptions to those problems when they are beyond their capabilities. This position is responsible to establish good public relations with bus drivers, passengers and the general public.   

Personal Contacts:  Contact with the Dean of Administrative Services, Dean of Student Services to gather and receive instruction relating to the operations of the buses and athletic coaches for the purpose of scheduling trips.

Supervision Received:  Oral and written assignments are given by the Deans of Administration and Student Services, Coaches, and President.  Methods and procedures are established by Federal and State Laws, College policy and the Dean of Administrative Services.  Work is reviewed by the Dean of Administrative Services.   

Supervision Exercised:  This position supervises the bus drivers of the activity buses.  

Essential Functions:  This position provides safe and efficient transportation to passengers in an environment conducive to maximizing the opportunities provided by the College.      
    

AREAS OF JOB ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:

--Maintains a driver pool with drivers that have required passenger license, physical examinations and first aid certificates.

--Maintains complete and accurate files including files for individual drivers, buses and schedules.

--Ensures that drivers maintain clean bus inside and out and are operational.

--Notifies supervisor in case of mechanical failures, scheduling problems, accidents or other relevant matters.

--Schedules required inspections, routine service work and needed repairs.

--Periodically up-dates supervisor on bus drivers and acts as advocate for bus drivers.

--Reports all accidents and completes required reports.

--Exercises responsible leadership while discharging the duties of the position.

--Performs other duties as deemed necessary.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge:  Knowledge of state and federal regulations as it relates to activity bus operations. General understanding of operation and maintenance as it relates to passenger buses or over the road trucks; use and care of related tools and equipment.

Skills:  Skills in the supervision of bus drivers, assigning bus drivers for trips, and scheduling  routine inspections,  maintenance and repairs to buses and bus related equipment.

Abilities:  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contracted in the course of work; to read, write and follow guidelines and instructions and to manage and direct personnel.

License:  Hold a valid Montana drivers license.  Meet additional health, first aid and other requirements as determined by the State of Montana and Board of Trustees.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to:

--High School degree or equivalent and some experience in operation of a bus or over the  road truck.

JOB PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

Evaluation of this position will be based primarily upon performance of the preceding job characteristics, areas of accountability and performance, and requirements.

Probationary period for this position is six (6) months with the option of extending it for an additional six (6) months.
