Setting up a VPN from home using Windows XP

Windows XP Instructions

Step 1: Navigate to the Control Panel under the Start menu.

Step 2: Locate the Network Connections icon and click it.

Step 3: Click Create a new connection.

Step 4: Click Next.

Step 5: Select Connect to the network at my workplace. This allows you to create either a dial-up or VPN connection. Click Next.

Step 6: Select Virtual Private Network connection. Click Next.

Step 7: Type a name you would recognize later in the Company Name field. Ex: DCC VPN. Click Next.

Step 8: Type in the Host name field. Click Next.

Step 9: Select My use only, click Next.

Step 10: Check the Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop box. Click Finish.

Step 11: Locate the Dcc Vpn icon you created on the desktop and click it.

Step 12: Click on the Properties tab.

Step 13: In the Security tab, choose Advanced (custom settings), click Settings.

Step 14: In Advanced Security Settings page, select Optional encryption from the Data encryption drop down menu. Choose Unencrypted password(PAP), click OK.

Step 15: Back on the Security tab, click IPSec Settings.

Step 16: Check Use pre-shared key for authentication, type dccvpn12 in the key field, click OK.

 Step 17: In Networking tab, choose L2TP IPSec VPN from the Type of VPN options. Click OK.

Step 18: Time to connect. Type in the username and password you use to login to your computer at work. Check Save this user name and password for the following users. Select Me only and click Connect. You are now connected to the VPN.

Step 19: To Disconnect, click on the same desktop icon you did in Step 11, this dialog box appears and click Disconnect.
