High school age students that have training in welding technology are invited to register for the 2009 Welding Technology Contest hosted by Dawson Community College April 15th in the Ullman Center. The event begins at 8:30am and is limited to 48 participants. Prizes are supplied by local businesses.
High School Age students that have training in welding technology may enter as individuals. A maximum of four students from the same school may enter. The top ten individuals will be recognized and receive awards and prizes. The top three teams will receive recognition. All four scores from individuals will count toward team scoring.
The contest begins with a written test then proceeds to the following areas, gas welding, arc welding, and MIG welding. Welds will be judged by welding professionals. Scoring of all parts of the contest will all be weighted equally and the combined score will determine places for individuals and teams.
Students are asked to provide personal protective equipment that includes: shade 10 lens helmets for SMAW & GMAW and shade 5 lens goggles or face shield for OFW. Safety glasses, gloves, appropriate welding attire as well as pliers or tongs. Chipping hammers and brushes will be provided.
Following lunch, which is available on campus, local employers will speak to the group. Campus tours will be available while scores are tabulated.
