Josh Link took the mound for Dawson Community College Saturday against the University of Mary JV. Six innings later Link walked off the mound with a ‘no-hitter’ to his credit.
Link and his Buccaneer teammates picked up a 10-0 triumph over Mary in their second game in the Subway tournament held at DCC’s Kolberg Field. Link allowed a total of just four base runners throughout his six innings of work. One Marauder reached on an error and three more reached via the way of a base on balls. Link also struck out eight batters in the contest.
The Buccaneer offense aided Link’s effort by scoring five runs in the bottom of the 6th to end the game by the 10-run rule. The Bucs also scored three runs in the second and two more runs in the third.
Trevor Gardner paced the Buccaneer offense by going 2 for 4 from the plate with two RBI. Ricky Hedstrom also had two hits and he drove in a run. Zach Griffith knocked in two more runs with a hit. As a team DCC had 10 hits for the game. Danny Bennett was the catcher for Link’s no-hitter.
In the opening game of the tournament DCC defeated Prairie Baseball Academy out of Lethbridge, Alberta by a final of 7-4. Gardner went all seven innings on the mound for Coach Brent Diegel and the Buccaneers to pick up the win. Gardner gave up seven hits on the contest.
Gardner helped his own cause by driving in two runs with a pair of singles. Catcher Jeff Allen also had two RBI.
PBA scored two in the first before the Bucs answered with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Prairie Dogs would score a pair of runs in the fifth to tie the score at 4-4. DCC came back with its own two runs in the bottom of the 5th and added an insurance run in the sixth to secure the 7 to 4 win.
The Buccaneers and the Prairie Dogs hooked up again on Sunday in the championship game of the Subway tournament. PBA got its revenge this time around with an 11-inning triumph over the DCC. The final score was 4-3.
Brady Zimmerman pitched 9 2/3 innings for DCC. Griffith came on in relief of Zimmerman and was saddled with the loss.
Dawson scored twice in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. The team held this lead until PBA pushed across three runs in the top of the 6th inning of play to go up 3-2. The Bucs were able to force extra innings when they scored one run in the seventh.
Bennett and Dex Bowen were both 2 for 5 to lead the Bucs offense. Bennett drove in one of the Bucs three runs.
For the game the Prairie Dogs out hit the Bucs 12 to 6. “We got out played, yet had several opportunities to win,” noted Diegel. “We blew our chances. It was a disappointing loss.”
In other action at the Subway tournament PBA defeated University of Mary JV once on Saturday and then again on Sunday.
The Bucs will host Bismarck State on Friday and Saturday (April 10 & 11) in Mon-Dak conference action.
