Janelle Higgins has been hired by Dawson Community College as the new women’s softball coach. Coach Higgins comes from Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa where she was the assistant basketball coach for two years and helped with softball for one year. Her other coaching credits include head softball coach at Northeast Nodaway High School in Ravenwood, Missouri where the team set a school record for wins and advanced to the district final game for the first time in 10 years. In addition, she was the assistant coach at Saydel High School in Des Moines, Iowa for the last five summers. She advanced her team to the state tournament in 2007 and placed fourth in the class 3A.
Coach Higgins is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri. As an athlete she played two years of softball at Southwestern Community College where she was a two year starter and a two year All Region Academic team member. “Playing for the legend Ron “Fox” Clinton in college” Janelle said “was a great experience and guided me toward a career in coaching and teaching”. Janelle also slapped the puck at Iowa State University for a year of Women’s Ice Hockey.
Coach Higgins comments “My drive to coach and continue a successful program comes from a great coach and mentor, Coach Andy Pals who drilled: Defense Wins Games, Look Sharp, Play Sharp, Never Give Up, and Any Team can be Beat. There is always a team at state or nationals with a 500 record that someone over looked and they came to play that day! He is one of the reasons I am where I am today”.
DCC fans welcome Janelle and look forward to “Catching the Action” during a new year of DCC women’s softball. Go Lady Bucs!
