The Buccaneer volleyball team made program history Tuesday night at the Toepke Center, winning its first home match ever in a five-set thriller against Dakota College at Bottineau.

"It is fabulous to win our first ever home match and our fourth match on the season," said Coach John Marble. "This is a match that we expected ourselves to win."

The Dawson Community College women came on to the court with immediate authority, showing off a strong net game early on as they jumped to an 8-2 lead in the first game. The Ladyjacks, however, were able to make a comeback and take the first set with a score of 23-25.

The Bucs came back to dominate the second game 25-11, followed by scores of 20-25, 25-13 and 15-11.

"We focused on playing our game," Marble said. "In sets one and three, we played to their level; sets two and four, we played our game. The difference was sets won and won dominantly."

DCC sophomore hitter Amanda Shadbolt, who recently was named the Mon-Dak Conference player of the week, helped lead the team with 12 kills, three aces and two solo blocks.

Freshman Ariel Johnson matched Shadbolt's 12 kills, hitting a .333 on the night with only three errors on 27 attempts.

Kirby Sabec hit a .389 with nine kills and just two errors on 18 swings.

Setter Terah Lund put up 36 assists, tying her best numbers from last year's inaugural season for the Buccaneers.

Defensively, Myriam Lebied-Julien picked up 15 digs and Lund and Sheeran each added two blocks.

Marble said the win puts them above last year's win record, with plenty of season left to go.

"We have already exceeded last season's results, and have done it against much tougher teams," he said.

The Bucs are back at the Toepke Center at 7 p.m. Friday to host Region IX play against Casper College and again at 7 p.m. Saturday for Mon-Dak conference play against the North Dakota State College of Science.

On Monday, the team hosts Bismarck State College for the first annual Dig Pink match to help raise awareness for breast cancer. First serve on that match is set for 7 p.m.
