Dawson Community College is enrolling students in Farm and Ranch Business Management and Agricultural Marketing and Financial Analysis. These programs are designed to serve those who are actively engaged in farming or ranching enterprises. The Farm and Ranch Business Management program focuses on computer, accounting and other business skills. Students will learn practical methods for using QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel to improve recording-keeping and decision support on their farms and ranches. The Agricultural Marketing and Financial Analysis curriculum focuses on reading and evaluating financial statements and calculating the ratios used by lenders to evaluate production agricultural businesses. AMFA students will evaluate basic commodity marketing, marketing strategies and management strategies relative to current farm programs. Risk management includes the use of contracts, understanding the futures market, futures and options strategies for management of price risk.
Both the FRBM and the AMFA programs include two levels of learning opportunities for students through traditional classroom sessions and individual tutorial sessions. Traditional classes are scheduled at the campus once a week and provide enrollees the opportunity to learn and discuss instructional topics as a group. Both programs include the individual tutorials with their instructor. Tutorials provide the opportunity for one on one work and have been well received by past enrollees.
In order to better serve the busy agricultural producer, DCC has implemented a delivery system which allows students who have high speed internet to attend the campus class sessions and receive tutorials from their homes. Live classes are broadcast via the internet and students can participate by speaking into microphones or by typing in chat areas. The option of attending class through the internet has enabled producers to take advantage of the unique opportunity to engage in business management education while responding to the daily demands of their operation. They can prepare for the future while taking care of the present.
