Nevada Professor on Campus for Accreditation Visit

Dr. Doris Dwyer

Dr. Doris Dwyer, Western Nevada College, will be on campus Monday, October 25 to conduct a one day visit for the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). She will meet with students, faculty, staff, board members and administration to evaluate our implementation of the 2009 Commission recommendations.

A history and humanities professor at WNC's Fallon campus, Dr. Dwyer is one of Western Nevada’s most honored faculty members. She has twice been voted Instructor of the Year by students at the Fallon campus, was honored by her peers as Outstanding Faculty Member and was given the Governor's Humanities Award by the Nevada Humanities Committee. In 2005, she was presented with the Nevada Regents Teaching Award. Her colleagues described her as an innovative teacher, a state and nationally recognized scholar, and a productive researcher. Former students said her innovative teaching methods gave them a realistic view of what a university course would demand from them and her high expectations challenged them to excel. She may be best know, however, for her more than 250 appearances nationwide as a Chautauquan, where scholars painstakingly study historical figures to take on their personae, and then illuminate their characters in live presentations.

Teaching and learning are fundamental to all we do at DCC. From the selection of quality faculty to the reconstruction of the roof over our heads, the bottom line is we are here for teaching and learning. One question Dr. Dwyer may have for us is: How do we, at Dawson Community College, facilitate our time, energy, and resources to this singular purpose? Our answer: The Strategic Plan. The 2010-2013 Strategic Plan is the guide we all use to fulfill our Mission. It includes prioritized strategic initiatives and defined success indicators. The plan, “A VISION OF EXCELLENCE”, is on our website for easy and open accessibility. The document is our guide for the next few years. It will evolve as assessment practices utilized in program and curricular departments, in fiscal operations management, and in human resource management provide data to drive leadership decisions—decisions which reflect the plan and our mission. Basic to this mission is the fundamental reason for our existence which is to provide for teaching and learning.
