Aida – Guiseppe Verdi

October 25th - 5:30pm - DCC Choir Room - Free Admission

Aida will be presented free of charge to campus and community by the Opus Society October 25 at 5:30 p.m. in the Dawson Community College Choir Room as part of their opera education programming. Aida, a four act melodrama opera, was composed by Guiseppe Verdi between 1870 and 1871 based on a libretto by Ghislanzoni.  It was first performed on Christmas Eve in 1781 in Cairo, Italy. Aida was commissioned by Ismail Pasha, the Khedive of Egypt, for 150,000 francs. When the Franco-Prussian war delayed production, Verdi donated a portion of his fee to the victims of the siege in Paris. Viewed through an HD experience with permission from the Metropolitan Opera, Aida is a love story in which an Ethiopian princess is captured and brought into slavery in Egypt. A military commander, Radames, struggles to choose between his love for her and his loyalty to the Pharaoh. To complicate the story further, Radames is loved by the Pharaoh's daughter Amneris, although he does not return her feelings. Act one contains some of the most famous and best loved scenes.
