On Sunday February 20th, the last home game of the year against the Bottineau Lumberjacks took place. Both DCC basketball teams had beaten the Jacks away but hadn't seen them sense the start of the year.
The women's basketball teams played first and it was a battle right from the beginning. The Lady Bucs trailed most of the game but in the last 8 minutes of the second half the teams were tied. There was 30 seconds left in the game and the score was tied with the Buccaneers having the ball.
Coach Clingingsmith called a time out and drew up a play for Casey Grace to take an easy two pointer. All five players ran out of the huddle and set up in their places. Casey Grace tried to curl around her teammates at half court and ran to the sideline closest to the bench. Three seconds had passed when Arielle Boone threw the ball into Casey Grace. Number 21 on the Lady Jacks tried to steal the ball but ended out of bounds.
Again it was the Lady Bucs ball on the sideline with only ten seconds left. In a decisive move Arielle Boone lobbed the ball and Christel Enriquez jumped up to tip it into the basket. The ball hit the backboard and then the front rim and rolled off, the game had to go into overtime.
At the start of overtime the Lady Bucs came out strong, keeping the lead throughout the last five minutes to win 65-64. It was an extremely important win, ending the girls losing streak and helping them regain their confidence in each other.
The men's game followed with the Bucs leading through the 1st half. The Buccaneer Men's team stayed composed and played well throughout the game. They pulled away at the end to gain a win against Bottineau, 77-56.
It was a good day in the Toepke Center and a great way to end the home season for the DCC Buccaneer Basketball Program. The Bucs play one more game against Williston State College before the end of the year Region IX and NJCAA National tournaments.
