12th Annual Shaping the Future Conference April 15 & 16

Dawson Community College will host the 12th Annual Shaping the Future Conference for educators April 15 and 16. "This year's Shaping the Future Conference covers new uses and better safety for computer and cell phone users" said Brenda Stockert, Director of the Early Childhood Education Program at DCC. "Friday we will also have a special session for Head Start and another for early childhood professionals all day Saturday."

Check in begins at 8 a.m. for those who have preregistered. The fee for this event is $20 and includes .5 college credit from DCC for attending all day Friday or Saturday. Receive 1 credit for attending all day both days. Lunch is on your own. Registration deadline is April 6. Online registration and information is available on the web.

The morning session on April 15 runs from 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. with presenter Richard Guerry. Guerry is the founder of the Institute for Responsible Online and Cell Phone Communication. His presentation,The Course to Digital Consciousness LIVE Event is award winning and nationally acclaimed. LIVE Event provides digital citizens with a greater awareness of negative, irresponsible, and malicious digital behaviors and trends beyond the common issues of sexting, cyber bullying and sextortion and the method to reduce risk of becoming a victim of a cyber-crime.

The afternoon session on April 15 will be held from 1-4 p.m. with a choice of three workshops: 

Differentiating Instruction Using Technology Tools presented by Libby Solberg. Solberg is the area PESA Technologist. The workshop will show how teachers can effectively differentiate instruction by using a wide range of technology tools to engage learners at varying levels of readiness in multiple ways and by offering students options for demonstrating their understanding and mastery of the material.

Everything Google presented by Amber Hendrickson. A former classroom teacher, Hendrickson is now an integration coach, helping teachers become confident in integrating technology into all content areas, grade levels, and classroom settings. In this workshop participants will find out about the amazing tools Google has to offer teachers.

CLASS presented by Laurie Phalen. Phalen is the State Manager and Early Childhood Specialist for EHS, a Head Start technical assistance program in Montana. The CLASS workshop will show educators how to assess the emotional and instructional environment and effectively target efforts for improved academic outcomes for young learners.

The second session on April 16 runs from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. with occupational therapist Heidi Brown. Brown will present Sensory Integration, a workshop dealing with children's behaviors related to sensory integration problems and strategies to work successfully with these children.
