Glendive, MT - The Buccaneers baseball team opened conference play with a double header on Sunday, April 10th against Bismarck State (ND). The Buccaneers won the first game 12-0, and continued to bring in the runs in game two with a 15-2 win.
In game one, Freshman Danny Smith (Tremonton, UT) pitched 4 shutout innings, allowing just two hits on the day. Smith has now improved his record to 3-1 on the year with a 0.97 ERA in 21 2/3 innings pitched. Freshman Andy Hopson (Ogden, UT) pitched 1 inning in relief to finish the shutout.
Meanwhile, for the Mystics offensively, they had no runs on two hits.
Dawson Sophomore Tanner Newman (Bozeman, MT) went 2-4 with three runs scored and four stolen bases. Freshman Hunter Balmer (Brigham City, UT) went 2-2 with two runs. Sophomore Chris Mjelstad (Laurel, MT) went 1-2 with one homerun and four RBI’s. Mckay Hedin (Logan, UT) went 2-3 with one homerun and two RBI’s. Josh LeProwse (Butte, MT) went 1-1 with two RBI's. The Buccaneers had twelve runs and nine hits in the win.
In game two, Sophomore Tanner Newman (Bozeman, MT) pitched 4 innings and allowed two runs on two hits while striking out four and improving to 2-1 on the year with a 3.82 ERA in 14 2/3 innings pitched. Freshman Jordan Thompson (West Jordan, UT) pitched 1 shutout inning in relief. Twenty games into the season the buccaneers are exhibiting a 3.04 team ERA.
Sophomore Chris Mjelstad (Laurel, MT) went 1-4 with his second homerun of the day. Freshman Hunter Balmer (Brigham City, UT) went 2-2. Freshman Danny Smith (Tremonton, UT) went 2-3 with two doubles and five RBI’s. Mckay Hedin (Logan, UT) went 2-2 with two runs scored. The Buccaneers had fifteen runs and eleven hits in the win.
Offensively, the Mystics had two runs on two hits in the second game.
The Buccaneers (12-8-2-0) return to action at 1 p.m. on Wednesday April 13, for a double header against Williston State College.
