After volunteering around 500 hours in the month of October at various events like HarvestFest and Haunted Hollow, Montana Campus Corps is ready to host the 2nd Annual Bucky’s Turkey Trot! Last year, it consisted of a 1 mile run for children, and a 5k/10k run for adults wherein families could either donate canned goods for admission or pay in cash. In this manner, we raised food for the Dawson County Food Bank.
This year, though, the event will include a citywide, student-led food drive to reach our ambitious goal of 2,000 pounds. It will consist of a competition between the dormitory halls of Dawson Community College to see which group of students can collect the most food.
The kickoff will take place on Halloween night when Montana Campus Corps members trick-or-treat for canned goods on the south side of town. After that, the food drive will last throughout the month of November. Cans may be brought either to Montana Campus Corps host sites or to the Office of Community Involvement at DCC in the main building.
As we rapidly approach the holiday season, our local food bank needs our support in gathering cabinet items like canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned soup, canned meat, powder milk, cereal, crackers, rice, and pasta. So Clean out your cabinets and know that the knock you hear at your door on Halloween might just be a DCC student volunteer requesting food for the cause.
