Campus Corp on the move.

The month of March tends to shape up as a busy one for Montana Campus Corps at Dawson Community College. This one is no exception to that rule. In addition to our normal service sites like Jefferson Elementary School, Boys and Girls Club and the Farm-to-Table Store, we will be working on several special projects this month.

The first projects will happen on March 6 and 8, when Campus Corps students partner with AmeriCorps VISTA member, Anne McHale, to create Nancy’s Gardens with children at the Boys and Girls Club. The idea is to give groups of children a box in which they can grow spinach, kale, lettuce and other leafy vegetables. Growing this produce will give the kids an opportunity to learn about the science of gardening, about the importance of eating healthy foods and about the joy of growing your own vegetables.

Next, Campus Corps will travel to Livingston for DCC’s first Alternative Spring Break trip from March 11 through March 17. Instead of choosing a vacation to Las Vegas, flying out to a beach, going on a ski trip to Bozeman or even visiting home for a week, some students decided to devote their time over the break to helping a woman in need by working with Habitat for Humanity to perform a Critical Repair on a local resident’s home. Specifically, participants will remodel the bathroom and build a small deck with a ramp.

Lastly, members will work at the Dawson County Health Fair on March 22nd distributing disaster preparedness bags in support of Red Cross Month. The bags are free and contain valuable information about how one should plan to react in the case of natural disasters like fires, floods and snowstorms. Also in support of Red Cross Month, the college will host a Citizen CPR class from 1 p.m.—5 p.m. on March 23rd in the Toepke Center.
