Starts the weekend of March 22.

This March students as well as interested law enforcement professionals can take advantage of two weekend courses, Basic Drug Investigation and Basic Drug Surveillance. Offered through the Criminal Justice Law Enforcement program at Dawson Community College individuals are required to complete Basic Drug Investigation in order to take the second offering - Basic Drug Surveillance.

The first course, CJLE 116 Basic Drug Investigation, will be presented by Ron Kemp. The first course runs Friday and Saturday, March 22-23.  Friday class begins at 3:00 p.m. and on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. This is a 1 credit course that will prepare students for drug investigation and enforcement operations. Course work includes insightful instruction regarding narcotics laws, drug identification and related paraphernalia, various methods and techniques used to investigate drug related offenses while building a solid foundation with proper documentation. This two day course covers best practices with regard to informants, evidence handling, search and seizure, officer safety, the search warrant process and court preparation.  Also discussed are entrapment and liability issues and the inherent dangers involved in this field of enforcement.

After the conclusion of CJLE 116 Basic Drug Investigation, CJLE 118 Basic Drug Surveillance, will begin Saturday, March 23 and continue through Sunday March 24. Presented by Ron Kemp this course is also 1 credit.

Basic Drug Surveillance is a continuation of LE116 Basic Drug Investigation. Designed to provide the law enforcement students with practical experiences, Basic Drug Surveillance, examines the surveillance aspect of drug investigation and enforcement.  This includes; informant debriefing; electronic intelligence gathering; officer safety and documentation. Students will become familiar with the various types of equipment utilized in drug enforcement surveillance, become familiar with the various state and federal legal codes, and will conduct practical exercises in a mock drug buy.
