“Nest”, a mezzotint by Serbian printmaker Snezana Petrovic is one of the works included in the “International Mezzotint Exchange Exhibition” installed in Dawson Community College Gallery 126 from March 25 through May 9. Twenty-four mezzotint images, created by twenty-four artists from ten countries, are included in the exhibition. The artists are all members of the International Mezzotint Society (I.M.S.) and participated in the 2011 membership print exchange.   Each printmaker created a handmade mezzotint edition of twenty-five prints exchanging their work with the other artists and donating one impression to be exhibited.

Artist, printmaker, mezzotint specialist, I.M.S. member, teacher, and Professor Linda Whitney of Valley City State University has organized this traveling exhibition for the enrichment of art lovers everywhere. The exhibit has traveled around the world and will be coming to us from Stanten Island, New York for its final showing at Gallery 126. During the Spring of 2011, Gallery 126 had the privilege of exhibiting Whitney’s playful and richly rendered mezzotints. Whitney is, also, included in the “International Mezzotint Exchange Exhibition.”

The International Mezzotint Society (I.M.S.) was established in 1997 by Dr. A. David Crown. There are more than 100 members internationally. The primary objective is to share enthusiasm and information, and spread knowledge of the technique and its history, to art audiences and other mezzotint artists who may presently feel somewhat isolated in their exploration of this beautiful and demanding printmaking medium. The I.M.S. also extends membership to devotees, mezzotint collectors and print-lovers.

The mezzotint printmaking process can be long and labor intensive.  It was invented by German artist Ludwig von Siegen in the 1600s and was extensively used by artists and craftsmen up to the early twentieth century when other printmaking techniques became more popular.  In the last twenty years it has experienced resurgence. Most of the artists in this exhibition will be exhibiting their prints in the invitational 2013 International Mezzotint Festival opening next month in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

In order to help viewers understand this demanding printmaking process a how-to mezzotint video DVD created by David Crown, and tools of the trade, burnished plate, rocker, and burnisher will also be on display as a part of this enlightening exhibition. Anyone interested in learning more about mezzotint may contact Professor Linda Whitney, 701.845.7598, or [email protected].

Gallery 126 hours are Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., evenings Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 6:30 - 9 p.m. Located in room 126 next to the library.
