"Over Sydney" by John Postovit

January 27 through March 27

Dawson Community College is pleased to present “A Trip Around the World” an exhibit of pastel drawings by artist John Postovit. His artworks will be on display from January 27 through March 27. The show fills two galleries with 34 beautiful artworks: Gallery 126 in the main building located next to the Jane Carey Memorial Library and the Impromptu Gallery in the Ullman Center. Both galleries are open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and in the evening Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

For the past twenty-eight years, John Postovit’s preferred medium has been pastel and charcoal on paper. He has developed a unique technique applying layers of rich intense color to his large drawings. Over the years, his artwork has evolved from abstract to detailed, more complex and more representational images that still retain their expressive gestural textures.

As the viewer journeys through Postovit’s exhibits, they will see the common thread that ties drawing to drawing: his distinct style, the intense colors and the surreal, anachronistic objects floating through his compositions. “Augmented reality” is the term the artist uses to describe his drawings, “quite realistic, but often hiding unexpected elements.” Postovit invites us to look a little closer. There are two surreal elements in his repertoire that he “just can’t seem to get rid of.” Those inner tubes and zeppelins keep showing up in his pastel and charcoal creations.

Postovit has always preferred to change themes, varying his subject from figurative to historical, mythological to allegorical and cityscape to landscape.  But the theme he returns to again and again, in various guises, is travel.

Postovit draws inspiration from his frequent travels throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada, Europe, Australia and Southeast Asia. Five of his solo exhibits have explored the theme of travel.  “A Trip Around the World” is one such exhibit. From his unique perspective, Postovit shares a glimpse of all the locales he has visited. The primary inspiration for this particular exhibit comes from his trips to Italy, England, Bulgaria, Thailand and Australia.

John Scott Postovit was born in Grand Forks in 1962, and raised in Bismarck and Fargo. He attended the University of North Dakota, and graduated in 1985 with a B.F.A. in Painting and a B.S. in Physics. Since then, he has lived on the east and west coasts, as well as a nine-month spell in Florence, Italy. His paintings and drawings have been exhibited in galleries and museums in various locations across the country, including North Dakota, Minnesota, New Jersey, Washington and California. He has been represented in Minnesota by the Rourke Gallery for 25 years and to date, his art has appeared in 44 solo shows and 108 group shows.  He currently lives south of San Francisco where he draws, paints, and teaches math and physics.
