POSITION: Science Tutor, 40 hours per week during the academic year. (.646 FTE)
SALARY: Grade 10, Classified Staff Salary Schedule.

SUMMARY OF WORK: This position is responsible for tutoring students in science courses.
Nature of Work: This position performs duties which require attention to detail, accuracy, and timeliness. Position works mainly in the Academic Support Center and classrooms. Position must adhere to standards of confidentiality of information and documentation. May be required to assist students in chemistry and biology labs where contact with hazardous chemicals may be encountered and OSHA health and safety regulations must be followed.
Personal Contacts: Daily contact with College students, including those students who are under-prepared, learning disabled, physically disabled, or who are reluctant to seek the services they need. Position must coordinate schedules with students and faculty each semester, and maintain a working relationship with faculty, staff and administration.
Supervision Received: Receives supervision as stated in yearly contractual agreement and arranges daily work responsibilities accordingly. Receives additional instructions from supervisor through memos, e-mail, and monthly Student Services meetings.
Supervision Exercised: No direct supervision.
Essential Functions: This position requires the ability to communicate orally and in writing, read written material, adhere to written policies and procedures, prioritize daily work responsibilities, coordinate schedules, tutor students, attend meetings, maintain records and prepare and produce reports. Position must be physically able to reach with hands and arms, perform finger and hand dexterity, use visual acuity, and be mobile.
AREAS OF JOB ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:
--Responsible for tutoring Science classes one-on-one or in group settings.
--Maintain accurate account of students and hours tutored.
--Assists with orientation and registration activities at the beginning of each semester.
--Makes tutoring decisions such as deciding which skills the students need to review, deciding on the methods to use to assist students to understand the assigned materials for their classes, and advising students in choosing future classes.
--Assists students with Science problems on a daily basis.
--May assist students in chemistry and biology labs where hazardous chemicals may be present.
--Performs other duties as required.
Knowledge: This position requires a thorough knowledge of Science resources, tutoring techniques, learning style preferences and techniques, and study skill techniques.
Skills: This position requires skills in the use of computers, copiers and calculators.
Abilities: This position requires the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; follow verbal and written instructions; assist students with problems in course work; demonstrate patience and understanding; offer encouragement; contribute to the student’s success; select the appropriate tutoring technique based on each student; establish effective working relationships with fellow staff members, students, supervisor, and the general public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to:
--A Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Related field
--One year experience working with academically disadvantaged adults
