The Glendive American Legion baseball program has hired Alex Rivas as its new head coach for the upcoming 2009 season. Rivas was with the Blue Devils last year as an assistant with head coach Travis Langan. Rivas also helped with the program as an assistant in 2005 when Chad Jones was the head coach for the Blue Devils.
Rivas came to Glendive from Kearns, Utah in the fall of 2003 to play college baseball at Dawson Community College. He played for Brent Diegel and the Bucs for two years. Rivas then played one season in Chicago at Olivete Nazarene University.
Rivas returned to Glendive and has been helping Diegel with the DCC baseball team since 2006. This is his fourth season involved with coaching in the Buccaneer program.
In Utah Rivas had a successful baseball career as a player both for the American Legion program and at Kearns High School.
"I am looking forward to the opportunity to coach the Legion team here and looking forward to a great year. I¹m hoping to get a good turnout for this year¹s team. Hopefully we will get a lot of the younger kids to come out," he said.
The Glendive Blue Devils will be holding their player registration/sign-ups for the 2009 season on Sunday, March 22, at the American Legion Club in Glendive. Registration is to begin at 2 p.m. Practices will begin in late April or early May. The first game is scheduled for the end of May with district and state tournaments getting under way in late July. Any questions on the Blue Devil program can be addressed by Coach Rivas or by a board member.
