Dawson Community College’s volleyball team has been nominated for a national academic award based on a team GPA that includes three 4.0s.
Coach John Marble said the team earned a collective 3.42 in the classroom last semester, putting them in contention for the National Junior College Athletic Association’s academic team of the year award.
“It puts us solidly as a premiere team academically in the nation amongst all junior colleges,” he said, adding that the team’s GPA speaks well of players’ character.
“It shows the work ethic of the players outside the gym,” Marble said. “Ultimately, we’re here to get an education and getting it done in the classroom is important.”
Marble said he takes a proactive approach to ensuring academic success for his players, implementing a study table policy and tutoring assistance when necessary.
“If we find players that are struggling, we work with them to get them the help they need,” he said.
“Whatever it is, we work with them constantly to help them be successful in the classroom.”
Marble added that one of the benefits to playing sports is that it helps athletes balance life’s demands on and off the court.
“Our team is living it out and doing it well,” he said.
The NJCAA award will be announced later this year, and Marble said he expects to see the DCC volleyball team in the top 20 nationwide.
