Dawson Community College will host the 10th annual Montana GEAR UP camp (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) from June 14th to the 20th.
For many children, the likelihood of attending and succeeding in college is small. Too many students face seemingly insurmountable barriers, including low expectations, inadequate academic preparation and a lack of information about education options and opportunities.
The 7 day camp at Dawson is designed to give 7th and 8th grade students a sample of college life. The participants attending classes taught by DCC instructors sleep in the residence halls and eat on campus. Class offerings include: history, music, art, math, business and a variety of other subjects. A day trip to historic Fort Union and Fort Buford is also planned.
To date there are fifty-two registered participants from Wolf Point, Lame Deer, Charlo, Sun River, Lincoln, Marion, St. Ignatius, Browning, Rocky Boy, Hays/Lodge Pole, Hardin, Box Elder, Winnet, Evergreen schools. The camp has grown in popularity in recent years.
The message of Montana GEAR UP is that postsecondary education is possible for all Montana students, regardless of economic background, and strives to empower them to realize that ambition. Montana GEAR UP brings this message to middle and high schools, students, their parents, and the community through early college and career awareness activities, scholarships, financial aid information, and improved academic support, helping raise the expectations and achievement of all.
