After losing their opener at the Mon-Dak preseason tournament in Williston, the Dawson Community College men’s basketball team finished the tourney with two wins. On Friday, the Bucs defeated Dakota State by the final of 86 to 73. Saturday DCC knocked off Bismarck State College 68 to 66.
Against Dakota State the Buccaneers opened up a 48-37 halftime lead on their way to the 13-point win.
“We came out quick, built a lead and then kind of went flat,” Coach Don Mast said. DCC shot 60 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes compared to 37 percent by the Lumberjacks. The largest lead of the contest came in the first half when Dawson went up 43-27.
The Bucs cooled off in the second half and made just 36 percent of their shots from the field. However, Dakota was just slightly better after the break at 39 percent. The Bucs made good on 23 of 41 free throws for the game, compared to the Jacks 14 of 23.
The Bucs’ Mike Chinn led all scorers with 18 points. Teammate Chris Davenport chipped in with 17. Tyson Harding was the top score for the Bottineau team with 11.
Karlton Brown also reached double digits in the scoring column. Brown added 12 points for the Bucs. Chinn also led Dawson in rebounding with 11. Stefan Dinkel dished out four assists for the Buccaneers.
In the next game, Karlton Brown hit a shot with just 2.9 showing on the clock to give Dawson the two-point win on Saturday. The Bucs turned a five-point halftime deficit into a 68-66 come-from-behind win.
Bismarck State had extended their halftime lead to ten, 37-27, early in the second half of action. DCC then came roaring back to get the win. Stefan Dinkel led the charge with a team-high 22-point night. The Mystics Kyle Weisbeck led all scorers 26.
Joining Dinkel in double-digit scoring for DCC was Chris Davenport. Davenport finished the contest with 16 points. Mike Black led the way for the Bucs on the boards. Black hauled down eight rebounds. Black also paced the Bucs in assists with six.
“The second half both teams shot better and we played with a little better energy. We learned some glaring weaknesses we need to continue to improve on,” Mast said.
