On April 2nd and 3rd the Women’s and Men’s Basketball Programs at Dawson Community College held their First Annual Bucs and Bunnies Coed Easter Basketball Tournament. Seven teams from Glendive and one from Wolf Point competed for prizes donated by local business in the Toepke Center Gymnasium. The tournament will be an annual fundraiser to support men’s and women’s basketball programs at Dawson.
The Easter Basketball Tournament reunited DCC alumni from the 80’s like Mike Skillestad and Ty Milne, an entire team of Alumni from the 90’s Desi Torres, Bob Amsler, Trevor Houck, Crystal (Reiter) Amsler, Casi (Peterson) Houck with current Dawson County High School athletes: Katy Peterson, Blair Milne, Brittney Lystad, Alex Milne, Cody Sevier, and Copper Fink.
The final team match up of the tournament was between ‘Give 2 DCC’ and ‘BMMR’. The ‘Give 2 DCC’ team was made up of DCC staff, DCC family members and two current buccaneers, Julian Faltus who scored 81 points in three games and Stephone Myricks. ‘Give to DCC’ just barely knocked out ‘BMMR’ in the championship with a 64-55 win. The ‘BMMR’ team consisted of community members and was something of a family affair; Ty, Alex, Kyle, Blair and Brittney Milne; Ryan and Kyle Buckley; Alex and Kayla Rivas; and Hannah and Scott McPherson.
Individual tourney winners were women’s 3pt Champion Kayla (McPherson) Rivas with 11 3 pointers in one minute who also put up 39 points in her second round game versus Torres & Associates and DeMarlow Simmons who brought home the 3pt and Dunk Champion crown with a little lift from Chris Davenport.
Bucs and Bunnies Coed Easter Basketball Tournament supporters donated prizes for competitors and fans alike. The DCC athletic department extends its thanks to these Buc sponsors; Glendive Coca-Cola, Jock Stop, Electricland/Radio Shack, Beaver Creek Brewery, CC’s Café, Holiday Gas Station, Pizza Hut, Glen Bowl Lanes, Dairy Queen, Whistle Stop and the DCC Bookstore for their generous support.
Some of the prize winners included Pam McClellan who went home with a digital camera, donated by Electricland, after watching her two daughters compete. Jim and Louis Vogele, who attended nearly every minute of play, received certificates for everything from Pizza to Blizzards and Bowling and Paul Torres took home pizza from Madhatters.
In recognition of their hard work the DCC athletic department wishes to thank all the referees who donated their time over the holiday weekend to help raise funds for both basketball programs. A special thanks to Jerry Jimison who donated three games and when he wasn’t wearing stripes was babysitting in the stands for two of his daughters and a son-in-law. Thanks also to Rich Rowe and Tom Taylor for announcing games as well as Paul Dufner and Abbey Mast for making our t-shirts and Daryl Clingingsmith on the clock and soda donations. Thanks to all our student athletes that volunteered during the tournament, especially everyone that put a team together and competed, we hope to see you all again next year!
