Dawson Community College Theater Department will present the hilariously funny play entitled: The Foreigner written by Larry Shue and directed by Ron Conrad. This play is a sentimental, often hilarious farce, full of loopy jokes with a gentle lesson about tolerance and friendship slipped in unobtrusively.
First produced at the Milwaukee (Wisconsin) Repertory Theatre in January of 1983 it eventually won two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production.
About the Play:The scene is a fishing lodge in rural Georgia often visited by “Froggy” LeSeuer, a British demolition expert who occasionally runs training sessions at a nearby army base. This time “Froggy” has brought along a friend, a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. Before leaving the lodge , “Froggy” tells all assembled that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Once Charlie is alone the fun begins, as Charlie overhears more than he should. Actually many revelations are made with the thought that Charlie doesn’t understand a word being said. That he does fuels the nonstop hilarity of the play and sets up the wildly funny climax in which things go uproariously awry for the “bad guys” and the “good guys” emerge triumphant.
“We have many returning students and several new faces on stage this semester” said Conrad. The cast includes; Daniel Curtis, Emily Erhart, Cole Johnson, Caroline Kunst, Jeannette Oliphant, Kyle Quale, Shawn Wentz, Jeff Whaley, and on sound and lights Louies Herman.
