Dawson Community College wrapped up their softball season this past weekend in La Junta Colorado. The Lady Buccaneers finished the regional tournament 1 and 3 with a 5th place finish in the NJCAA Region IX Division I tournament. The team completed the MonDak conference with an 11- 1 record and a first place finish. Their overall record was 20-19 for the season.
This year featured 5 MonDak all conference players and the MVP of the conference, Sophomore Remick Ramsey. Ramsey a product of C. M. Russell High School in Great Falls, MT was also named first team all region in Region IX. Ramsey completed the season with 53 hits in 107 at bats and a .495 batting average. She also had 34 RBIs and 7 home runs. Dawson Community College Head Coach Jim LeProwse commented that "Ramsey just tore it up this year at the plate. She had a great year".
Other players to earn MonDak all conference were Sophomore Pitcher/First Baseman Lauren Binkoski a Billings Central High School alumnus, Sophomore Right Fielder Nicole Miller from Billings Skyview, Freshman Center Fielder Kayla Lake from Sidney High School and freshman 3rd baseman Keela Nedens from Billings West. "All of these players were very deserving of the post season accolades" LeProwse said.
"Lauren had a great year at the plate hitting .437 with 28 RBIs and 2 home runs." LeProwse added "Binkoski also was a dominant force in the pitching circle this season winning all 7 conference games that she pitched during the MonDak". Binkoski is also an academic all-conference and academic all-American selection.
Nicole Miller hit .359 with 28 RBIs and 5 home runs for the season. LeProwse commented that "Nicole is the type of player that any team would be lucky to have. She just gets the job done at the plate and in the field. Nicole has one of the strongest arms around and can play anywhere you put her". Miller pitched frequently during her freshman season, but had struggled with back problems for much of her sophomore year and did not pitch much this season.
The final 2 members of the MonDak all conference team from Dawson Community College are freshmen Kayla Lake and Keela Nedens. LeProwse states "Kayla hit .377 with 10 RBIs and 1 home run for the season, but the number that stood out for Kayla is her batting average against the other MonDak teams". Kayla hit a staggering .619 in those games. "She is one of the fastest players you will find. If an infielder bobbles the ball or even hesitates at all Kayla will beat out any ground ball." Lake also plays a very solid center field for the Buccaneers. "Nedens also had a fantastic batting average in the MonDak this season. She had the highest batting average on our team in MonDak conference games she hit a whopping .679. Keela had a great year for DCC overall she ended up hitting .352 with 27 RBIs and 4 home runs in all games combined. Nedens has also done a nice job at 3rd base for the Buccaneers this season".
Coach LeProwse said "I am sad to see the season end, but feels that it was a very successful one". His team ended the season with a .367 average. The Lady Bucs also hit 26 home runs and 62 doubles this year which he is very pleased with. "I will be sad to see my sophomore players leave, but I am very excited for next year also." The Buccaneers lose 5 sophomores and will return 9 freshmen to next year's squad. Other sophomores the Buccaneers lose for next season are Short Stop Julia Robinson from Butte High School and Outfielder Tabitha Myers from Havre High School.
