Dawson Community College Presents the Second Annual Black History Month Art Exhibition

February 26, 2022 –Dawson Community College and Art Instructor Jennifer Wheeler proudly present the second annual Black History Month Art Exhibition. In honor of Black History Month, the Art Exhibition includes both Student Artwork and African Art and Artifacts on loan from Friends of the Campus Gallery Al and Cindy Heidt. Also on display are a sampling of children’s books containing Black themes and protagonists, on loan from Eloise True, Library Director at Jefferson Elementary School. The exhibition also includes interactive displays: a Jamaican steel drum which patrons can play, and a colorful vine that patrons can clip their own handwritten leaf to.

In celebration of Black History Month, the Art Department installed the 2nd annual exhibition in the Jane Carey Memorial Library on the DCC campus. The exhibition will be on display for viewing till the end of February. The Exhibition Reception was held on Wednesday, February 16 from 12:30-1:30, and was well attended by students, faculty, administration, and community members. Patrons enjoyed the mix of mediums and styles in the student artwork, and the African art on loan added texture and dimension to the exhibit. Scattered throughout the exhibition are educational placards, which add informative and historical depth to the items displayed.
