Financial Aid Requirements, Rights & Responsibilities


In order to receive financial aid the student must:

  1. Have financial need, except for some loan programs.
  2. Have a high school diploma or its equivalent (state issued GED, HiSET, TASC).
  3. Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
  4. Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student working toward a degree or certificate.
  5. Not be in default on a student loan or owe a Title IV refund or repayment.
  6. Have a valid Social Security Number.
  7. Make satisfactory academic progress.
  8. Register with the Selective Service, if required.

Students Rights and Responsibilities

As a student you have the right to know from Financial Aid:

  • Financial Aid Programs available at Dawson Community College.
  • How students apply for aid and how eligibility is determined.
  • How and when aid is disbursed.
  • Return of Title IV Funds policy.
  • Policies regarding satisfactory academic progress.
  • Terms of, schedules for, and the necessity of loan repayment and required exit counseling.
  • Terms and conditions under which students receiving federal education loans may obtain deferments. A Deferment List available on the Department of Education website at

As a student, you are responsible for:

  • Completing all forms required by Financial Aid accurately and by the published deadlines.
  • Notifying the Office of Financial Aid if any changes are made in your name, address, marital status, financial situation, or enrollment status.
  • Reporting to the Office of Financial Aid any additional assistance from other sources, such as scholarships, waivers, and education benefits.
  • Maintaining satisfactory academic progress.
  • Reapplying for aid each year by completing the FAFSA at

Please note: Financial aid awards are tentative awards and are not finalized until enrollment status is final. Any changes in enrollment status should be reported to the Office of Financial Aid immediately so that any necessary adjustments may be made.

As a recipient of financial aid, you also:

  • Affirm that you authorize that the financial aid funds that you have accepted may be used to pay for other institutional charges in addition to tuition, fees and approved bookstore charges.
  • Affirm that you agree to pay the tuition, fees and bookstore charges in full upon notice from the College if you lose eligibility for the aid awarded or fail to abide by the terms and conditions to receive the awards.
  • Affirm that you will not receive a Federal Pell Grant from more than one college for the same period of time.
  • Affirm that you have not borrowed in excess of the loan limits, under the Title IV programs at any institution.
  • Affirm that you understand that if you lose eligibility for financial aid due to changes in enrollment or other factors, that you will be held responsible for any charges not paid by financial aid.
  • Affirm that you understand that you will be required to repay financial aid and bookstore charges for courses that you did not attend.  (To avoid financial penalty, you must take action to drop course(s).  If after the last day to drop a course to qualify for a refund you completely withdraw from all your course(s), you may owe a substantial portion of your award back to the College and/or the Department of Education (see Return of Title IV Funds).
  • Affirm that you understand that financial aid is not allowed to cover audited courses, basic skills courses, repeat courses that exceed your second attempt, and courses outside of your curriculum.
  • Affirm that you understand that your aid may be adjusted if an additional aid exceeds your demonstrated financial need, Affirm that you understand that your grant(s) will not be recalculated for enrollment status changes that occur after the census day of the 16-week session. This includes adding a 10 week or second 6-week course(s).

Remember, DCC’s Financial Aid priority date is Dec 1.

Financial Aid applications received after Dec 1 will be accepted and evaluated as received and will be subject to the availability of funds.
