Reserve Officer Training

This course is open to DCC Criminal Justice Law Enforcement majors pursuing the AAS degree in Criminal Justice (all options) and to those individuals who have been selected, or hope to be selected, as reserve police officers by a law enforcement agency.  It is expected all students have the proper foundation of reading, writing, spelling, comprehension, etc. for a college-level course. Students with academic needs should notify the DCC Program Director no later than the end of the first day of class of any special academic accommodations they may require so that appropriate arrangements can be made. 

Course Schedule:

  • September 27-29: Lecture Session I
  • October 4-6: Lecture Session II
  • October 11-13: Firearms Training
  • TBD: First Aid/CPR

Course Description:  This course is intended to provide students with the 88 hours of state-mandated training required to be a reserve  police officer in the state of Montana. Students will receive instruction in the following areas as mandated by MCA 7-32-214:

  • Introduction and Orientation
  • Police Ethics and Professionalism
  • Criminal Law
  • Laws of Arrest
  • Criminal Evidence
  • Administration of Criminal Law
  • Communications, Reports, and Records
  • Crime Investigations
  • Interviews and Interrogations
  • Patrol Procedures
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Police, Human, and Community Relations
  • Juvenile Procedures
  • Defensive Tactics
  • Crowd Control Tactics
  • Firearms Training (additional fees may be required)
  • First Aid (additional fee for card)
  • Examination

DCC has included additional training hours for review sessions. In addition, each topic has its own set of competencies and learning  objectives. These are provided to students as each instructor deems appropriate and within each training/instructional session.
